Genesis Medina, a 1 year-old child from the village of San Estevan in the Orange Walk District, was killed in a hit and run traffic accident.

Police have since charged Eliseo Larios, a 28 year-old resident of Trial Farm Village, with manslaughter for her death. It happened just before 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 27. The toddler was playing with her older brothers in their yard which is normally sealed with a protective gate meant to prevent her from going out on the road unattended. Unfortunately, the brothers lost sight of her for a very brief moment, and in that period of time, she wondered into the street. That’s the time when Eliseo Larios is believed to have been driving by. Police suspect that he was under the influence of alcohol, and when he drove past the child’s house, his gold Mazda pickup truck struck the child, and dragged her tiny body along the road for about a hundred yards or so. The impact was massive, and the head and bodily injuries killed her almost instantly.

Police say that Larios did not even stop to render aid, and reportedly continued on his way until he crashed into a cane field on the outskirts of the village. He has since been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention, failing to stop and render aid, failing to report an accident, and driving a motor vehicle with an alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit. He will be arraigned in Magistrate’s Court at the earliest convenience.
