Belize City resident Mark Brown, 45, is on remand at the Belize Central Prison until February 26, 2016 after he was charged with attempted burglary with intent to steal from inside a woman’s house. Allegations are that on Sunday, December 27, he attempted to enter the home of Elaine Elizabeth Williams at #54 Racecourse Street, Belize City. Police say that the home owner caught Brown as he was attempting to squeeze his way through her bathroom window. She called police and Brown was detained.

In court, Brown appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser. He pleaded not guilty to one count of attempted burglary and told the court that he was never on Racecourse Street. Brown said that he was stretching to pick an aloe vera plant from a yard and he went too close to the gate causing it to open. When the gate opened it made noise and that was when a Hispanic man saw Brown and alerted the neighbours. Brown said he never entered anyone’s yard to steal anything.

Senior Magistrate Fraser remanded Brown into custody until February 26, 2016. Court records also show that he owes the court $600 for an old fine. Brown told the court that he cannot pay that fine and as a result was sentenced to serve six months imprisonment.
