After spending 5 years in Belize making films, 37 year-old Canadian Matthiew Klinck was killed at his home on the outskirts of the Spanish Lookout Community in the Cayo District. Klinck was renting a house in Selena Village, a community which is a very short distance from Spanish Lookout. His residence is very remote, to get to the location, one has to pass through a gate area, which is secured by a caretaker who is on duty all the time. Klinck had moved there a few months ago.

On Monday of this week at about 8:40 pm, information was received of a male person found at his residence in Selena Village, Spanish Lookout, apparently dead. As a result, San Ignacio Police visited the area where they observed the lifeless body of a male Caucasian man lying motionless and face up about 15 feet from the house dressed in a blue jeans pants and an off white T-Shirt. It was in its initial stage of decomposition and had what appeared to be multiple cut wounds among them was a cut wound to the left side of the neck.

A medical examiner has determined that he was stabbed about 14 times, most of which he suffered to the torso, and neck. They found his house wide open, along with his vehicle, but according to the caretaker, as far as he’s seen, nothing was stolen. Police are diligently investigating this crime, but because the crime happened away from prying eyes, it is unlikely that there would have been any witnesses who can come forward and help investigators.

Klinck spent his time in Belize shooting and directing films, the most well-known of which was his feature film, “Curse of Xtabai”.  In 2014, he started working with other Belizeans to produce the first Spanish soap opera television series, which was called La Isla Bonita Telenovela. He is credited to making an indelible mark in Belize’s budding film industry. He truly believed that Belizeans actors and actress had talents which were world-class.
