Gilbert Alamilla, 30, better known as “Mr. Program”, greeted the New Year in jail at the Belize Central Prison after he failed to pay a fine for assaulting a police officer. The local musician was convicted on November 10, 2015 for assaulting a police officer and using obscene words. He was convicted in absencia by Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith after he failed to show up at his own trial and forfeited his rights to put up a defense. The Chief Magistrate fined Alamilla $810 and immediately issued a warrant for his arrest. Upon arrest, he was to pay the fine or serve five months imprisonment.

Alamilla was arrested on Thursday, December 31. He could not make the $810 payment; therefore, he was sent to prison to begin serving five months imprisonment.
The charge against Alamilla dates back to November 24, 2014. Cpl. Aniber Castellanos claims that he was physically and verbally assaulted by Mr. Program. The officer testified in court that they responded to a report of domestic abuse at Alamilla’s residence on Kelly Street and it was there that he cursed them out and eventually kicked him in the chest.
