Salvadoran national Blas Antonio Contreras Andrade, 41, is spending time at the Belize Central Prison after he pleaded guilty to living in Belize illegally and was unable to pay a thousand dollar fine.

Andrade was busted by a team of Immigration Officers on Monday, February 1, and asked to produce identification and immigration documents to explain his status in Belize. Andrade could not do so and as a result the officers escorted him to their office in Belize City where he was charged with the offense of failure to produce a visitor’s permit.

Andrade appeared in court before Magistrate Carlon Mendoza on Wednesday, February 03, where he pleaded guilty to the charge. He was fined $1,000 plus $5 cost of court fee which he was ordered to pay immediately or serve ten months imprisonment in default. The Immigration Department also made a submission for Andrade to be removed from the country upon payment of his fine or serving of his prison term. Andrade was unable to pay his fine and has been sent to prison on a warrant to serve his ten months period behind bars.
