Jorge Velasquez, 35, who was accused of raping a 12-year-old girl back in September of 2014, is behind bars on remand at the Belize Central Prison after he could not post bail granted by the Chief Magistrate on Wednesday, February 24.

A preliminary inquiry (PI) took place before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith to determine if there is sufficient evidence to commit the case to trial. In court, Velasquez was represented by attorney Bryan Neal. Prosecutor in the case, Cpl. Christopher Smith, is relying on the statements of the victim, the child’s doctor and other witnesses.

At the end of the PI, Chief Magistrate Smith ruled that a prima facie case had been established against Velasquez and that he will have to stand trial for rape at the April session of the Supreme Court. Velasquez’s old bail was revoked and a new bail of $2,000 was offered with one surety of the same amount. He was unable to post bail up to closing time and as a result he will be remanded to the Belize Central Prison until he can meet bail.
