On Friday February 19, Guatemalan national, Odilio Gutierrez was sentenced to 6 years in jail after he was found guilty of drug trafficking.

The 29-year-old resident of the Jane Usher Boulevard area of Belize City was unrepresented when he appeared before Magistrate, Carlon Mendoza. There he wasted no time and pleaded guilty to the offenses of possession of a controlled drug with the intent to supply to another person or persons for the purpose of drug trafficking.

For the offense he was fined 10 thousand dollars and remanded to prison for 3 years. If he fails to pay the 10 thousand dollar fine he will serve an additional 3 years in jail.

Gutierrez was arrested on Monday, February 15, 2016 on Iguana Street Extension where police caught him with 264.1 grams of cannabis inside a knapsack he was carrying at the time. At about 6:11 p.m. on that day, PC #2102 Dionicio Pineda and PC#1024, Dykes Rodriguez were on mobile patrol on Iguana Street when PC Pineda’s attention was drawn to a Hispanic male person wearing a green and blue in colour Polo Shirt and a long blue jeans pants with a black school bag on his back and behaving suspicious. As a result of his behaviour, Officer Pineda stopped him and conducted a search on him for illegal drugs and firearm. During the search, PC Pineda found a black plastic bag inside the knapsack. In it police found the drugs.
