In 2008, then 19-year-old William Torres was accused of having sex twice with a 14-year-old girl in Western Belize. On Monday July 19, Torres who was facing some years in jail was set free after the virtual complainant and her mother testified in court that they did not want to proceed in the matter against him.
The victim, who is now 16, first took the stand and said she does not want to proceed with the matter against her ex-boyfriend. The girl said that she has suffered enough since the charges were placed against Torres and she just wanted it to end now. The girl’s mother, who also took the stand, said that while she was not aware in 2008 that both of them were having sex until later, she thought that both of them had suffered enough and while she did not expect them to go as far as becoming sexually active in 2008, being in jail, Torres will not have a future.
Torres is accused of having sex with the 14-year-old girl on two occasions, on October 27 and 28, 2008. According to the 14-year-old, in 2008, on the two days in question she claims that Torres whom she said was her boyfriend, visited her cousin’s home in the night where they had sex. The child had slept out of her mother’s home for three days. The child’s mother then took her to the police station where the matter was reported and the child was examined by a doctor and she was certified to be carnally known.
Prosecutor in the case Christell Wilson indicated to Justice Herbert Lord that she wished to withdraw the charges against Torres since she could not proceed any further in her case against Torres. With that, Torres’ two charges of carnal knowledge of a female child were withdrawn and he was told he was free to go. If found guilty of the charge, Torres would have been facing five to ten years imprisonment.
