Rushiel Bevans42-year-old Rushiel Bevans, a self employed resident of #6220 Keating Crescent, was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, September 1, for two charges: one count of common assault and one count of using insulting words. Allegations are that on August 23, Bevans assaulted Nuri Muhammad while at the Education Office on North Front Street. Eight days later, on August 31, he was accused of uttering insulting words to the Principal of the Muslim School, Mrs. Lana Ahmad.

According to Muhammad, Bevans pushed him backwards and that’s when he fell over a chair and to the ground. Principal Ahmad says that while at a meeting, Bevans used insulting words to her saying, “woman yuh deaf, are you stupid?  We will get yo fired, you are too stupid.” In Court this morning, Bevans chose not to waste the Court’s time and pleaded guilty to both charges before Magistrate Aretha Ford in Court #4.

Bevans was imposed a non custodial sentence in the form of a $200 fine plus $5.00 cost of Court for the common assault upon Muhammad. He was fined $100 plus a $5.00 cost of Court for insulting words towards Principal Ahmad. That’s a total of $310.00 that Bevans must pay by November 1 or serve two and one month respectively in default. He was also bound to keep the peace for six months in the sum of $600 effective today or in default six months imprisonment. The Magistrate explained that he must not get into any trouble for the next six months or he will have to pay the $600 fine or go immediately to jail.  He must also stay away from the two virtual complainants in the case.

According to Nuri Muhammad, he was at the Education Department delivering mail when Bevans, whom he knew for the past ten years, stood in the door way and blocked it. Bevans then pushed him backward which caused him to fall over a chair behind him. Muhammad said he just got up; went to deliver his mail then started heading to the police station. He was attacked a second time by Bevans who began to throw punches at him which caught him in the left chest and left shoulder.

Muhammad later reported the matter to police where he requested court action. But then on August 31 at about 10:05 a.m., Bevans was at a meeting which was being held at the Muslim Community School when according to Principal Lana Ahmad, 51, Bevans walked into the classroom where they were having the meeting and he began shouting that they were having an illegal meeting and yelled insulting words at her. According to Principal Ahmad, she never responded to Bevans’ remarks but felt annoyed and that’s why she visited the police station and reported the matter.
