Leshawn LinoShamir Henry, a BDF soldier living at the BDF Housing project was stabbed to death allegedly by his estranged common-law-wife, 24-year-old Leshawn Lino, a Domestic of #265 Cahal Pech Street, BDF Area on Thursday September 2.  Three days after the incident, on Monday September 6, she was taken to Magistrate’s Court in Belize City where she was arraigned on a single charge of manslaughter.

Lino who is the daughter of Sgt. Lino who is presently attached to Patrol Branch Belize City and who was once a prosecutor at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court was arraigned in Court #2 before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer. She was given a special escort to court as she was taken over in a different police vehicle than other prisoners and an hour after new matters were brought to court.

Lino, who hid her face while entering the courtroom, was taken to court #2 where no plea was taken. There was no objection to bail and she was offered bail in the sum of $7,000 plus one surety of the same amount which she met before 12:00 on Monday. In her attempts to avoid the camera, she was taken out of court from a side door of the courtroom and she ran into the nearby Brodie’s Pharmacy and exited from the front of Brodie’s store. She was then met by her father, Sgt. Lino, as they walked out on Albert Street and into Church Street in an attempt to avoid the camera.

The charges against Lino arose from a domestic dispute in which Shamir Henry, 24, a BDF soldier was stabbed once and died. The incident occurred on the night of Thursday, September 2, the eve of Lino’s 24th Birthday. Information of what transpired between the couple is still sketchy but according to police a report, at about 8:27 a.m., on the morning of Friday, September 3, they visited the scene were they saw the lifeless body of Henry lying face down on the ground. Police investigations revealed that Henry and Lino had a domestic dispute which led to a fight between them. As a result, Lino allegedly stabbed Henry once to the left lower section of the neck near his Adam’s apple.

At 10:40 a.m., on Friday morning, a post-mortem was conducted on the body of Shamir Henry and at 3:20 p.m., that evening police served Lino with the single charge of manslaughter.

According to Press officer, Fitzroy Yearwood, their investigation revealed that at the time of the stabbing death, Henry had gone to visit Lino and his daughter 2-year-old daughter at #264 Cahal Pech Street, BDF Housing project area. Lino is said to have been preparing food and came out of the house with a kitchen knife and that’s when they got into an argument.

It is alleged that during the argument Henry began to beat her and that’s when she stabbed him to the neck. The nature of that argument is not certain, but reports indicate that the estranged couple had been having an ongoing domestic dispute that led Lino to make several reports of domestic abuse against Henry.  We understand that some of her reports were pending in court, and for the others, she had refrained from seeking legal action.

Leshawn Lino is due back in Court #2 on October 22.
