Two families in Belmopan continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones after two men were knocked down and killed by a vehicle being driven by a man who police believe was drunk at the time.
The victims, 26 year-old Leonardo Ramos and 17 year-old Rigoberto Cabrera, were both travelling on Ramos’ motorcycle on the morning of Saturday, February 7, at around 1:50 a.m. Their families believe that they were heading to a house that they were looking after.

They never made it because they ended up in a head on collision with a Mitsubishi Gallant car, which was being driven by 24 year-old Daniel Cunil, another resident of Belmopan. Both Ramos and Cabrera suffered severe head and neck injuries, and they died on the spot; Cunil suffered minor injuries.

Police transported the bodies of the accident victims to the Western Regional Hospital’s morgue, while police started investigating Cunil. After taking samples from him and taking his statement, police charged him with 2 counts of manslaughter by negligence, 2 counts of causing death by careless conduct, driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention and driving with alcohol concentration above prescribed limit.

Leonardo Ramos left behind a wife and 2 sons - a 4 year-old and a 1 year-old.

There was also another fatal traffic accident which also happened in the Cayo District. This one happened at around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, at an area on Route 40, in Spanish Lookout. 19 year-old Josue Gilberto Garrido, a resident of Duck Run 2 Village, was driving his red Meilun motorcycle. He was approaching the area by the Country Meats Farm when he slammed into a Ford 8000 truck, which was being driven by Gladimir Cano. He suffered massive head and bodily injuries, and he died on the spot.

His body was transported to the San Ignacio Town Hospital’s morgue, while Cano was transported to the Western Regional Hospital for treatment.
