(May 18, 2010) The Social Security Board has confirmed from separate sources that fraudulent cheques, alleged to have been issued by the Social Security Board, were presented to and cashed by at least four business houses in Belize City.  The cheques obtained were issued in the names of Darnell Garbutt and Michael Gomez, and enchased using Social Security Cards as identification.

The Board has been collaborating with the banks in an ongoing Police investigation into the matter, with the expectation of early arrest, conviction and exposure of the perpetrators.

The Board is hereby cautioning the general public not to accept third party cheques, but to refer them to the banks, which are in a much better position to validate cheques issued.
