The University of Belize (UB) is pleased to announce that for the first time its Bachelor Degree in Tourism Management Program will be offered in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, in January, 2011. Dean of the Faculty of Management and Sciences (FMSS), Dr. Vincent Palacio explained that the expansion of the program “is in keeping with the continued commitment of the national University to provide affordable and accessible educational and training programs that are relevant, responds to, and contributes to national development needs and priorities of Belize.”
As the tourism sector continues to be a priority for the Government of Belize, the University is committed to playing an active role in the development of the tourism sector of Belize by producing quality human resources. Tourism, a vital part of the country’s economy, continues to be the main foreign exchange earner to the tune of approximately $586 million Belize dollars in 2007. Ambergris Caye, which has been classified as an important and vital destination for Belize tourism accounted for 42.3% of total tourism expenditure.
To date, some 80 students who have earned UB’s Bachelor Degree in Tourism Management are employed in all areas of Belize’s tourism sector, including the Radisson Fort George Hotel, the Belize Tourism Board, the Belize Tourism Industry Association, and PACT. In related news, The Faculty of Management and Social Sciences (FMSS) is also offering an Associate’s Degree in Tourism Studies, a programme being run in the English speaking Caribbean in partnership with the Caribbean Tourism Organisation. A recruitment session will be held at San Pedro Junior College on November 5 at 7pm.
