Mrs. Martinez presents cheque to Nurse Leticia Blake Pres. - Nurses Association
The 6th annual Ride Across Belize commenced on Thursday, June 4, 2009. Rohjani Perriott, Manager of External Relations at Social Security Board, said, “The ride is our largest fundraising event of the year. Each year a committee from the Social Security Board gets together and decides which organization is most deserving of assistance and we dedicate the funds raised to those organizations.”

The organizations selected for the 6th Ride Across Belize are the Belize Cancer Society, the Nurses Association and the Blood Donors Association. Perriott said that these organizations significantly impact the well being of our country and any assistance rendered to them is a handout to each and every Belizean citizen.

A symbolic handing over ceremony was held at the Social Security Board Belize City Branch Office after the first leg of the ride was completed. Laura Longsworth, Vice President of the Belize Cancer Society, said, “We will use the donation to focus on community education, developing our brochures, developing some videos with cancer survivors and so on for the community.” She said that the Government of Belize provides a subvention to keep them operational but beside that the Cancer Society depends primarily on donations; therefore, the gesture of the Social Security Board was “absolutely needed”.

Lydia Alpuche-Blake, President of the Nurses Association of Belize, said, “We want to build an extension to our building to serve as a resource center, a library, a conference room and a training session area for nurses.” The donation to the Blood Donors Association comes ten days before World Blood Donor’s Day, which is on June 14. They will be collaborating with the Belize Medical Associates to host a Blood Drive on June 20 at the Belize Medical associates NHI Southside Clinic at the Corner Regent and Rectory Lane.

The Ride Across Belize started in Corozal on Thursday and ended in Punta Gorda on Sunday. The amount of money raised has not been determined as yet as contributions are still being accepted and tallied. Last year the ride generated $20,000 in contributions.
