Belize City, Belize – March 18, 2011 –The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) awarded certificates of completion today to twenty-five (25) officers from the Customs Department, Immigration Department, Police Department, Border Management Authority and the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), after a weeklong training course in Customer Relations that began on Monday, March 13th, 2011.

“Officers at the border points are frontline personnel who are the first point of contact for our visitors,” says Tourism Director Seleni Matus. “Although we know they are adequately trained to carry out day to day duties, the BTB recognizes the need to assist with additional training which emphasizes the enhancement of the visitor experience.”

The intensive 20-hour training program was held at the Benque Viejo Police Headquarters and was delivered by Tourism Trainer Javier Gutierrez. The course included topics such as Attitude and Professionalism, Effective Communication, Handling Complaints, and Teamwork.

The Western border training was a part of the BTB’s capacity building efforts as outlined in our two year Action Plan. Several sessions have already been held, across sectors that service the tourism industry, and over a hundred individuals have received certification through the courses offered thus far.
