Free Wi Fi was activated last week at the Cayo Welcome Center in San Ignacio Town. The free Wi Fi is in fulfillment of a promise that had been made by Belize’s Prime Minister the Hon. Dean Barrow. In his New Year’s address, Prime Minister Dean Barrow had said, “So if 2014 was a year of infrastructure, 2015 will be a year of technology.”

A release from the Cayo Welcome Center states that the Management as well as the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council would like to say a special thank you to the Hon. Prime Minister, Dean Oliver Barrow, for his generous contribution to the people of Cayo by providing free Wi Fi to the Cayo Welcome Center.

“This initiative by his responsible Government now gives our visiting Guests, another reason to visit the Welcome Center,” states the release.

Residents who visit the Cayo Welcome Center and access WiFi on any mobile devise are first greeted with, “Welcome to GOB Wi Fi, Free Wi Fi powered by BTL’s High Speed internet.”

The new internet service in Cayo is capable of handling 100 users simultaneously and provides one hour of free internet for every user during a period of 24 hours.

Executive Director for the Cayo Welcome Center Burns Mendez is ecstatic about the free Wireless Internet service and expresses that the public should now use the service for educational purposes “…because information technology is the way of the future.” He is also welcoming guests and tourists alike to come and use the new service.

The equipment for the Wi Fi was installed at the Cayo Welcome Center in May of this year by Belize Telemedia LTD and with the transmitting instruments now in place, residents and tourists alike can now enjoy the World Wide Web from a wide area around the Centre.
