Raul Rosado, Chief Executive Officer of the Corozal Free Zone, spoke to the Guardian Newspaper about the ongoing developmental plan. There will be over a mile of paved roads with sidewalks, proper drainage and traffic signs. Rosado said he is disappointed over the fact that the Free Zone has been neglected for so many years. He said, “It was not a pleasant sight.” There were neither pedestrian crossings nor sidewalks. The security guards on the compound tell of many incidents where pedestrians were almost run over by unregulated traffic. Rosado said that he is determined to lead the way to recovery at the Corozal Free Zone. There have also been efforts to attract more business at the zone. There have been increases in advertisement in the Southeast part of Mexico; which is the Free Zone’s largest customer base. Many of the stores have developed special promotions. Over the weekend there was as much as 40% discount on items such as perfumes. For safety, the Free Zone has recently acquired a truck that they will equip and use as a first response fire truck for any fire disaster. In addition, the security guards of the Corozal Free Zone have been trained in firefighting techniques. There has also been a task force selected to inspect the buildings in the zone in an effort to develop better building standards. The main focus of the task force is fire safety inspection. Buildings must have fire escapes routes and fire detectors. These are only a few of the steps that have been taken to turn things around at the Corozal Free Zone. Raul Rosado said that he expects increases in sales by early next year. |

It is no secret that business has slowed down drastically at the Corozal Free Zone over the last two quarters. The Prime Minister announced that imports at the Free Zone are down 38.9%. However, that statistic has not delayed the infrastructural development of the zone.
