Minister with responsibility for Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Elodio Aragon Jr. has pledged that under his watch he will see the completion of the Marion Jones sports complex in Belize City. The Work on the complex began in August of 2009 with the construction of the perimeter fence, since then there has been ongoing work on the facility, ever so slowly it has been taking shape and now it is looking more and more like it will be completed.

Hon. Aragon explains that he has done a walk through of the facility and has been appraised of the work that has already been done and what needs to be done to complete the works. He says that at this point to complete the work it will cost in the region of 5 million dollars. “It is a priority for us to complete it,” he stated.

While there has been criticism that the complex is not appropriate and conducive for everyday use, Hon. Aragon explained that the complex is really designed for Belize as a country to host international games, “it is a national sporting complex,” he said. At the completion it will feature a FIFA certified field as well as a synthetic track and a cycling circular. For now the Ministry of Sports is severing ties with existing contractors and looking at financing from both government funds as well as external sources to complete the stadium.
