Football fans from all over Belize now have good reasons to rejoice for having been gifted with an almost four million dollar stadium in Belmopan. The magnificent state of the art Isidoro Beaton Football Stadium was re-opened to the public on Tuesday of this week in Belmopan, this time with the first FIFA qualifying synthetic turf in Belize.
Former home of the Bandits, the renovated Isidoro Beaton Football Stadium now has a seating capacity for 1,200 fans and will allow for play any time of the day or night and professional playtime anytime of the year. The FIFA two star polythene turfs would be warranted for up to ten years with the play of up to 40 hours a week.
At a brief ceremony on Tuesday, Mayor Khalid Belisle noted that just a few years ago, the idea arose for using some of the portion of the post proceeds of the Petrocaribe Program “…to spark a rejuvenation of sports in Belize.”
Mayor Khalid Belisle thanked our Country’s leaders for the realization of a dream.
“Let me join my voice to the expected chorus to follow as I say thank you to the Hon. Dean Barrow and the Government of Belize for having brought what had only been dreamed of to reality, in living color. We in the City [of Belmopan] promise to do our part to not only maintain what we inherit and receive today, but to improve on it for the benefit of all in the years to come…”
In his keynote address, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture with responsibility for Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Elodio Aragon Junior emphasized the benefits that the Isidoro Beaton Stadium will have on our youths.
“The future of this country lies with the young people and such facilities go a long way in promoting our young people to take up the responsibility of our Nation,” he said.
This stadium is setting the foundation for our athletes to achieve the highest of heights in terms of football and other activities”
In the early part of 2014, a team from the Belize Infrastructure Limited BIL, which coordinated the building of the Isidoro Beaton Football Stadium, had visited the site adjacent to the Football Federation of Belize FFB stadium to learn about the gaps in sporting and the standards that were needed to move our athletes forward. Fortunately, BIL was left with a little under $4,000,000.00 to spend for the improvement of the Stadium. Today the much visited Stadium, which is now the second FIFA certified stadium in Belmopan, comes equipped with adequate lighting, two media platforms, locker facilities for two different teams and an isolated area for the referees.
In a formal cutting of the ribbon, Tuesday, Mayor Khalid Belisle and the Hon. Elodio Aragon Jr. were joined by Area Representative and Minister of National Security, the Hon. John Birchman Saldivar, who is an avid football fan himself. Hon. John Saldivar was joined by other Cabinet Ministers, who were also given a tour of the spacious football facility in Belmopan. As noted by Christy Mastry, the General Manager of the Belize Infrastructure Limited, during her vote of thanks on Tuesday, the Hon. John Saldivar also had much input in making the Isidoro Beaton Football Stadium a reality.
