Ministry of Health Holds Workshop on Diabetes Healthcare Print E-mail

On Wednesday, March 10, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization opened a two-day workshop on “Diabetes Quality of Care Project” at the Institute for Technical & Vocational Education & Training Conference Room on Freetown Road.

The workshop was facilitated by international and local health care providers. The main objective was to introduce the Chronic Care Model as a tool to

address the quality of care for diabetes in Belize and to develop interventions based on that model to address issues of quality of care in health facilities.
 
Topics to be discussed over the two days are the Chronic Care Model; the role of nutrition on Diabetes Control; the role of education and self care in diabetes control; assessment of Chronic Illness Care; strategies for improving Diabetes Care and commitments on Interventions for Improving Diabetes healthcare in Belize.

On Wednesday, the Minister of Health, Hon. Pablo Marin officially launched the “Belize National Commission on Non-Communicable Diseases” (BCNCD).  The BCNCD is to keep the Ministry’s health and wellness initiatives and fulfill Belize’s obligations under the CARICOM Heads of Government “Declaration of Port of Spain: Uniting to stop the epidemic of Chronic NCDs”.  The roles and functions of the Commission include advising the Minister of Health on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) policies and legislation; ensuring that appropriate policies and guidelines are put in place for the prevention and control of NCDs risk factors and for the management of NCDs; advocating for continuous revision and implementation of legislation embodying the National Policy on NCDs and fostering a multi-sectoral approach for addressing the NCDs epidemic.

Membership of the BCNCD comprises of 16 representatives from local health related NGOs and the Ministry of Health.  The Commission is chaired by the Director of Health Services, Dr. Michael Pitts.
