The Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Belize, presents its compliments to the Belizean people and avails this opportunity to inform that on April 25th, 2010 we are celebrating the 21st anniversary of the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Belize.
On December 5th, 1978, the IV United Nations Commission adopted a draft resolution on Belize, which obtained 116 Belize in favor, 5 abstentions and 12 votes against, being the delegation of Venezuela the one that showed more support to the abovementioned resolution, which proposed thecountry's independence, and that was highly appreciated by Belize. The government of Belize, in gratitude to the Venezuelan government, donated two (02) lots of land located in the city of Belmopan for the construction of the Embassy in the capital.
The relations between both countries, before its formal establishment, were always characterized as being cordial and friendly. Due to the high dynamics of the relationship between the two countries, it materialized on April 25th 1989, after being granted by Guatemala the recognition to Belize as an independent State, the establishment of formal diplomatic relations, which was done through a Joint Communiqué signed in New York USA.
This new step in the relations between Venezuela and Belize represented a significant impulse for the deepening of cooperation between both nations, allowing starting the trade exchange, official visits either by High Level Officers or by representatives of both Belize and Venezuela.
With the rise to power of the revolutionary government of Venezuela, it has stepped into a whole other new level in the bilateral relations. An active cooperative participation under the principles promoted by our Liberator Simon Bolivar, Social programs implemented such as Mission Miracle, Energy Agreements such as PETROCARIBE, Non-Refundable Financial Assistance Agreements for the construction and repair of homes in Belize, demonstrate the commitment of the Commander - President Hugo R. Chávez Frías to the people of Central America and the Caribbean in search of a more humane world.
For these reasons, the Bolivarian government is very pleased for the evolution of diplomatic relations between the two nations over these 21 years and expresses its profound commitment to continue strengthening and deepening the complementary, cooperation and integration of our peoples with the aim of building a better quality of life and a better world that will allow our nations to obtain the greatest sum of happiness possible.
