On Monday 5th of July, 2010 Mr. Samuel Liu a Tilapia specialist from Taiwan visited Belize and met with the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Cooperatives the Hon. Rene Montero and technical personnel from the Fisheries Department.  The purpose of his visit was to discuss and identify

suitable sites for the production of a million fingerlings per year to meet the growing demand of tilapia.
The long term project is expected to be executed in a period of five years and will be broken down in 3 phases:

• Construction of a Tilapia Fingerling units

• Capacity training for Technical personnel and Farmers

• Construction of a processing unit with a view of processing tilapia for export

This Project is another initiative of the Taiwanese Technical Mission and part of the overall goal of the Ministry of Agriculture’s National Platform, Promoting Food Security - improving the livelihood of rural communities by increasing their farm income and at the same time promoting export to generate foreign exchange.
