Belmopan, Wednesday, 30th March 2011:

Some 290 students and 13 teachers of the Patchakan RC School in the Corozal District will now enjoy a more pleasant learning/teaching environment thanks to a project, which resulted in major renovation to the school’s facilities.

The project, which will be officially inaugurated tomorrow morning, is valued at $190,000 and was financed by the Government of Belize through a combination of a loan and grant from the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF 6) of the Caribbean Development Bank. The project was implemented by the Social Investment Fund.  The community contributed approximately $5,000 in labor for the project.

The largest portion of the project included the replacement of the asbestos roof with a new pre-painted galvalum roofing, installation of a new ceiling, electrical system, several windows and doors and painting of walls of the oldest building of the primary school.  This school building measures 108 feet long by 30.5 feet wide with an eight feet front verandah.   The building houses two classrooms, a principal’s office with a computer room and an extension built on one end for a Teachers’ Lounge.

The Teacher’s Lounge also received a complete facelift and a new Ferro-concrete bathroom block (14 ft. wide by 31 ft. long) for students and teachers was constructed.  This facility has substituted the existing six pit latrines which were damaged by Hurricane Dean.

The new sanitary block includes three toilets, two wash hand basins and one shower stall for the female students and two toilets, one urinal, two wash hand basins and one shower stall for the male students. The facility also includes one toilet, a wash hand basin and a shower in each case for male and female teachers.  The sanitary block was constructed on the western side of the school building which is designated as a hurricane shelter.

The guest speaker at tomorrow’s inauguration of the project will be the Hon. Nemencio Acosta, Area Representative for Corozal North.  Other speakers will include Mr. Daniel Cano, Executive Director of the Social Investment Fund, Mr. Pedro Cucul, District Education Officer, Corozal District, Brother John Eutice C.S.V, representative of the Patachakan RC School’s Management and Mrs. Teobalda Ruiz, Principal of Patchakan RC School.
