Belmopan, 3 August, 2009: A project for three additional new classrooms, which will reduce the over crowdedness at Midway Government Primary School in the Toledo District, will be officially launched during ground breaking ceremonies on Friday, 7 August, 2009 at 2 pm at the school grounds.
The project entails the construction of a three classroom building on top of the existing ground floor level. The new building will measure 72 ft long by 25 ft 6 inches wide along with a 72 ft long by 5 feet 6 inch wide verandah and will include a stairway on each end. The classrooms will have movable metal shutters and will be equipped with blackboards attached to the walls. Furniture will also be provided.
The project will be implemented by the Social Investment Fund, a statutory body under the auspices of the Ministry of Economic Development, andfunded by the Government of Belize through a loan from the Caribbean Development Bank for the sum of $175,549.65. Midway Village is situated 22 miles southwest of Punta Gorda Town in the Toledo District. It has a population of about 275 persons and was established in l990 by Maya Qe’qchi farmers seeking more fertile lands for their crops. The residents are mainly indigenous Mayas.
The village of Midway has grown since it was established and so has the school. The 116 students and five teachers are now packed into small spaces as a result of overcrowding and limited space. The project will provide a much needed upgrade to the classroom space at the school and improve the teaching and learning environment for both teachers and students. The new space provided under this project will allow the school to install a computer laboratory. The new building will also serve as a shelter in the event of a hurricane.
The guest speaker for the occasion will be Hon. Eden Martinez, Minister of Human Development and Social Transformation and Area Representative for Toledo East. Addresses will also be delivered by representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Social Investment Fund, the Midway Village Council, Village Alcalde and the principal of Midway Government Primary School.
The Social Investment Fund is the Government of Belize’s main implementing agency of projects aimed at addressing the basic needs of all Belizeans in an honest and transparent manner utilizing a community-based approach. Established as a statutory body in l996, SIF has implemented 427 projects valued at $52.6M in the areas of Water & Sanitation, Health, Economic Infrastructure, Education, Social Services, Organizational Strengthening and Micro-credit.
