Joel Borland is the 2016 KREM New Year’s Day Cycling Classic Champ Print E-mail

joel borland.jpg - 40.12 KbThe Cycling Federation of Belize held its 26th Annual KREM New Year’s Day Cycling Classic on Friday 1st January, 2016, in the Elite Open, Masters, Female, Junior and Youth categories.

The Elite Open, Under 23 and Master riders commenced the 96 miles journey from the Belize –Mexico Border at 9:00 am and concluded in front of Santos Diaz on the Central American Boulevard in Belize City.

In the Elite Open, U-23 and Masters categories some 58 riders started the course with 37 riders completing the event.

At the end of the race, it was Joel Borland of Belmopan DigiCell 4G Elite Cycling Team that captured first place in a time of 3:53:42. Borland made his move for the coveted title at Sandhill and rode solo into the city for a comfortable win.

Borland was followed by his team-mate Gregory Lovell who completed the event in a time of 3:54:28.

The third rider to cross the finish line was Byron Pope of Benny’s Megabytes and he was followed by Justin Williams who is unattached and then by Johnny Joan Valencia a Mexican who rides for Boarder Town to round off the top five finishers in the event.

The other top finishers include Scottie Weisse of Team Starlight and he was followed by Juan Manuel Yapur of Team Yapurland, Giovanni Lovell of Belmopan Digi Cell4G Elite Cycling Team, and he was followed by John Delong of Team Starlight and then by Phillip Leslie of Benny’s Megabytes to round off the top ten finishers.

In the Masters Category, first place went to Robert Mariano of Digicell 4G Cycling Team and he was followed by Robert Liam Stewart of Western Spirit Cycling Team, and he was followed by Kenroy “Smokes” Gladden who is unattached.

Meanwhile, the junior, female and youth riders started their 53 miles journey from the Orange Walk Town Hall to the finish line in front of Santos Diaz on the Central American Boulevard.

In the female category, first place went to Alicia Thompson of the Belize Bank Swoosh in a time of 3:02:15 to repeat as the KREM New Year’s Day Female champion. The second rider to cross the finish line was Kaya Cattouse of C-Ray Cycling Team; third place went to Paulita Chavarria also of C-Ray Cycling Team while fourth place went to Gabrielle Lovell of Digicell 4G Female Team.

In the junior category, first place went to Ernest Bradley of SMART Junior Cycling Team, second place went to Juhawi Ysaguirre of Cabral/Marin Cycling Team, third place went to Kaydine Pinello of SMART Junior Cycling Team, fourth place went to Gian Lino of Cabral/Marin Cycling Team while fifth place went to Brian Sutherland also of Cabral/Marin Cycling Team.
