The Champion of Champions football competition organized and hosted by Honorable Elodio Aragon Jr., Area representative for Orange Walk East and Minister with responsibility for sports came to an end on Sunday January 31. The Champion of Champions is played among the winners of the three different Cup tournaments organized by the UDP Representatives in the following divisions: Orange Walk East which is the Aragon’s Christmas Cup; North which is the Vega’s Cup and South which is the Lupe Magana’s Cup. This game was played in the beautifully reconstructed Louisiana Field in the Orange Walk East Division.

After months of grueling training and competition the teams that won were Progresso FC in the East, United Ballaz in the North and August Pine Ridge FC in the South. They then dueled for the coveted top prize and trophy. In the first game United Ballaz bested August Pine Ridge with a score of 3 to 1. In the second game Progresso defeated United Ballaz by 2 to 1. Finally on Sunday in the last game Progresso faced off with August Pine Ridge FC and defeated them by a score of 4 to 1 making Progresso the Champion of Champions this year.

Mrs. Lupe Magana Dyck was on hand to see the defeat of her team but still in true sportsmanship style stood in for Honorable Elodio Aragon to distribute the prizes. Progresso walked away with the first prize of $500, trophy and a ball while the other two teams received consolation prizes.

The competition is hard fought and attended by lots of fans from both Corozal and Orange Walk Districts. Since its revival in  late 2012 football has been growing by leaps and bounds in Orange Walk and certainly rebounding to its glory days when football matches were attended by hundreds of fans. There is no doubt that under this government and under Hon. Aragon as the Minister responsible for sports we will see the resurgence of football as one of Belize’s top sports.
