Police United stays on winning track

The Premier League of Belize Closing Tournament continued over the last week with a number of games across the country.
On Sunday 7 February, at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, the defending national football champions Police United continued on its winning ways when it edged out Verdes FC by the score of 3-2.
The host team Verdes FC was able to get onto the scoreboard first when Nahjib Guerra scored his team 1st goal of the game in the 4th minute of play to give Verdes an early lead. It was just beyond the mid-point of the first half of the game that the Police United made it onto the scoreboard when Amin August Jr. scored his team 1st goal of the game in the 29th minute of play to tie the score at 1-1.
The first half of the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Verdes FC in the second half of the game once again took the lead when Gilroy Thurton scored his team go-ahead goal in the 60th minute of play for a 2-1 lead. However, that lead was short lived as Devon Makin scored the equalising goal for the Police United in the 75th minute of play to tie the score at 2-2.
Police United winning goal came when in the 86th minute of play, Elio Ramirez untied the score at 3-2 when he scored the final goal of the game.
Meanwhile, at the MCC Grounds, the Belize Defence Force defeated the visiting Placencia Assassins FC by the score of 3-1.
The Belize Defence Force’s goals were all scored in the second half of the game with the 1st goal scoring in the 47th minute of play by Harrison Tasher. Tasher second goal of the game was scored in the 53rd minute of play that gave his team a 2-0 lead. The visiting Placencia Assassins made it onto the scoreboard when Dalton Eiley was able to convert a penalty in the 75th minute of play to cut the deficit at 2-1. However, the Belize Defence Force defence was able to successfully defend its goal for the remaining part of the game. The Belize Defence Force final goal of the game was scored by Leon Cadle in the 85th minute of play for the 3-1 victory.
The competition continued on Saturday 6 February with a single game on the schedule that was played out at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence Village between the Belmopan Bandits and Wagiya FC.
The Belmopan Bandits prevailed in the game by blanking the host team Wagiya by the score of 3-0. All of the Belmopan Bandits goals were scored in the later part of the second half of the game. The first goal was scored by Jordy Polanco in the 79th minute of play and this was followed by the second goal which was scored by Elroy Smith in the 88th minute of play and then the final goal by Marlon Meza in the 90th minute of play.
On Thursday 4 February, two back match games were played. At the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, Verdes FC won over the Belize Defence Force by the score of 3-1. The host team Verdes FC was able to get onto the scoreboard when Deon McCaulay scored the 1st goal of the game in the 10th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead. That lead was extended when Jarret Davis scored his team’s 2nd goal of the game in the 39th minute of play for a 2-0 lead.
The Belize Defence Force made it onto the scoreboard in the second half of the game when Vallan Symms scored his team’s only goal of the game in the 54th minute of play via a penalty kick.
Symms, scored an own goal in the 76th minute of play that gave Verdes the 3-1 victory.
Meanwhile, at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence Village, Placencia Assassins won handily over Wagiya FC by the score of 3-0. The goals for Placencia Assassins were scored by Luis Torres in the 43rd minute of play, Ashton Torres in the 72nd minute of play and Ashley Torres in the 85th minute of play.
