Police United maintains lead in Premier League Closing Season Print E-mail

The Premier League of Belize Closing Season 2016 continued over the last weekend with three games on the schedule.

On Sunday 14 February, at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, the defending national football champions of Belize, Police United continued on its winning path when it edged out the visiting Placencia Assassins FC by the score of 4-3.

The host team was able to get onto the scoreboard first when Kenroy Arthurs scored the 1st goal of the game in the 13th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead. The lead was further extended when Byron Usher scored his team’s 2nd goal of the game in the 33rd minute of play for a 2-0 lead. Devon Makin then made it a 3-0 lead when he scored his team’s 3rd goal of the game in the 40th minute of play.

The Placencia Assassins FC did not go down quietly and created a stir when Ashley Torres scored his team’s 1st goal of the game in the 41st minute of play to cut the deficit to 2 goals. Luis Torres then made it a 3-2 game when he was able to convert a penalty into a goal in the 43rd minute of play.

The first half of the game ended 3-2 in favour of the national defending football champions of Belize the Police United.

In the second half of the game, the visiting Placencia Assassins FC was able to tie the score at 3-3 when Leonard Valdez scored the equalising goal in the 59th minute of play.

It was not until the 83rd minute of play that Elio Ramirez was able to penetrate the Placencia Assassins FC defence and scored what proved to be the winning goal of the game for the Police United.

On Saturday 13 February at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan, the home team Belmopan Bandits white-wash the visiting Verdes FC by the score of 2-0.

The Belmopan Bandits got onto the scoreboard when Kervin Johnson scored the 1st goal of the game in the 8th minute of play that gave his team a 1-0 lead. The Belmopan Bandits defence was able to defend that lead and took the slight lead well into the first half of the game that ended in favour of the Belmopan Bandits.

It was not until the opening minutes the 48th to be exact of the second half of the game that Marlon Meza scored his team’s 2nd goal of the game for the 2-0 victory.

Meanwhile, out at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence Village, the Belize Defence Force blanked the home team Wagiya FC by the score of 1-0.

The only goal of the game was scored by Ricky Ricketts in the 40th minute of play for the win.

The competition will continue this coming weekend with three games on the schedule.
