The Congress of the Central American Sports Organization (ORDECA) held an emergency meeting in Guatemala City, Guatemala, from January 29-30, 2010, where it was agreed by a majority of the member countries to postpone the IX Edition of the Central American Games that were scheduled for March 4-14 in El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama to April 9-18, 2010 in the same three countries.
In speaking to Mr. Hilly Martinez, Secretary General of the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association and adelegate to the Congress, he said, “that the event venues in Panama would not have been ready in time for the March games, and as a result it was put to a vote for the postponement of the games. Mr. Martinez said that this was the only reason why the games were postponed until April when the venues in Panama will be fully functional.”
The following are the events scheduled for Panama: Athletics, Basketball, Boxing, Softball and Taekwondo, while in Guatemala the events are Cycling, Karate, Tennis, Table Tennis, Indoor Volleyball and Beach Volleyball, and in El Salvador Body Building.
According to Mr. Martinez, Belize will have some 77 plus athletes in Panama, which includes Athletics, Basketball (male only) and softball (male and female), Boxing and Taekwondo, while in Guatemala, Belize will have representation in Cycling, Karate, Tennis, Table Tennis, Indoor Volleyball (male and female) and Beach Volleyball, and in El Salvador, Belize will have representation in Body Building.
The official opening and closing ceremonies of the IX Central American Games will take place in the respective countries where the events will be staged.
