The IX Central American Games is now history. It will no doubt go down in the annals of the sporting world as the most disorganised games and certainly the most uncertain of all the games. As we reflect back on the games and the disciplines that Belize participated in Panama there were indeed some bright moments for the country.
The athletics team was the last team to leave the country, and even they had theirfair share of issues in getting to the Panama. The team left the country on April 15th, and a day later Tricia Flores won the first gold medal for Belize in the Long Jump competition where she also established a new games record of 5.97m. Kaina Martinez picked up a silver medal also in Long Jump at a distance of 5.45m.
Later that same day, Kaina Martinez captured the second gold medal for Belize. This time it was in the 100m event, and she finished first in a time of 12.05 sec. On Saturday April 17, Kaina Martinez captured her second gold medal in the games, but this time in the 200m with a time of 24.89 sec.
Also on Saturday Jonathan Williams captured silver in the 110 m hurdles. On Monday April 19, Jonathan Williams captured the gold medal in the 400m hurdles. Apart from the track athletes, Belize’s Christopher Reyes also captured a bronze medal in the Individual Road Race held on April 18,and a couple of days earlier the National Women’s Softball Team captured the bronze medal after going into the playoffs as the number one team.
