Kris Sanchez in play during the Blitz challenge with his opponent in NY., broadcast to 20 million persons around the world. On May 5th, Wednesday evening at 5:30 pm Bz time, an estimated 20 million people watched as young Belize chess player challenged his American counterpart from Brooklyn, N.Y. to an internationally acclaimed “BLITZ” chess game.

This type of chess, The Blitz Game, requires unprecedented and extreme concentration, focus, mental and

emotional balance and ability to choose the best move under extreme pressure. All those skills are highly desired in all the fields of schooling, daily life, work and college, so once again chess is an excellent educational tool as promoted by the BNYCF.

The two players were connected by a satellite link between Ian Anderson’s Caves Branch Jungle Lodge and Brooklyn, N.Y.  while Belize’s adopted Grand Master Maurice Ashley hosted and provided narration for the game.

Global Advertising Corporation, Saatchi and Saatchi, provided the promotion which allowed the game to be broadcast around the world and that has now brought Youth Chess in Belize to international awareness. But who was this junior player from Belize that challenged and conquered the US ?

Once the challenge was accepted by BNYCF, the offer was made to Stann Creek Chess Association President and Chess Coach Brian Chun, to select the player to compete. During a mini tournament held for that reason, two players were selected, the designated player and his back up , who would play if the designee was unable to. Stann Creek was selected as they were the winning district at the Chess Olympiad 2010 held last month.

So, who was the winning Belize Player, that Blitz’d the US…..? Introducing to you… the Belize Chess Blitz Champion…  Kris Sanchez from Stann Creek.  His back up was Fitzroy Chan, also of Stann Creek.

On behalf of the country of Belize, the BNYCF congratulates Kris Sanchez; Blitz Chess Champion. Kris, we are proud of you.. Congratulations and keep up the hard work!
