The National Women’s Softball Team of Belize won its first game in the on-going Pan Am Women’s Championship in Maracay, Venezuela. Team Belize after dropping its first four games, came roaring back with a much needed win when it defeated Ecuador by the score of 7-5. The score does not tell the whole tale of the game, and what we had perceived as the strong point of the team has actually let the country down - that is the defence . The winning pitcher for Belize was Janell Smith.
Belize lost its opening game to Colombia by the score of 7-0. The winning pitcher was Viany Garcia and the losing pitcher was Carla Humes. This is only the third time that Belize has played Colombia in international softball and we have lost allthree games. The first came in 1978 when Margaret “Mona” Peters loss the game that Belize was winning in the XII Central American and Caribbean Games in Medellin, Colombia. We lost again to them in 1993, when Linda Reyes was the pitcher of record during the X Central American and Caribbean Softball Championship, also in Venezuela.
On Sunday August 2, we lost to Brazil by the score of 13-0. The winning pitcher Anthia Kudo and the losing pitcher was Carla Humes. This is the first time that we have played Brazil in international softball. It seems that Brazil is the Cinderella Team at the Pan Am championship, as its only loss was to the USA.
On Monday August 3, we lost both ends of the “Double Head” first to Cuba by the score of 14-1. The winning pitcher was Yanelis Rodriguez and the losing pitcher was Janell Smith. Belize has played Cuba on three different occasions, and the only time that we have won a game from them was in 1993 when Linda Reyes blanked them by the score of 1-0 in nine innings in Venezuela.
In order for Belize to qualify it must win three of the last four games on its schedule.
