The Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, Earl Trapp,  Jr. made a recent trip to Taiwan and on his return will carry out some actions based on newly-acquired ideas. During his three-day trip, Mayor Trapp had the opportunity to visit Taiwanese cities and learn about the good practices in saving lives from possible flooding.

Mayor Trapp was particularly impressed with the methods used by the Taiwanese Government to divert huge volumes of water from the mountains. According to Trapp, tunnels are built from high above in the catchment areas, which divert water from populated areas to the sea.

“I am hoping that we will be able to work along with the Taiwanese technical committee and hopefully we can implement a miniscule idea of the flood diversion project in Taiwan”, said Trapp, just before the signing of a Disaster Prevention Project between Belize and Taiwan last Wednesday, which will now focus in San Ignacio Town and surrounding area.

Even while the Mayor was in Taiwan, preparations were also being made for a traffic light at the intersection of Joseph Andrews Drive and the Bullet Tree Road in San Ignacio Town. At a cost of $75,000, the new traffic light now being built will bring safety to pedestrians in an area that is normally congested with traffic. The Mayor also plans to place additional traffic lights at the intersection of 2nd Street and Joseph Andrews Boulevard in San Ignacio and one on the George Price Highway in Santa Elena Town just in front of Three Flags.
