In celebration of Women’s month, the National Council on Ageing with the support of the Western Health Region held a one day Sexual Health and Ageing Workshop for women 50 and over on Wednesday at the George Price Center for Peace and Development in Belmopan. The comprehensive sexual health session discussed normal changes that occur as women age and tips on how to maintain good sexual health and educate on sexually transmitted infections.

“We are talking about the general biological changes that a woman’s body goes through as she ages, we were also talking about safer sex,  and protecting yourself and maintaining good health as you become older,” says Ix Chel Poot, the Executive Director at the National Council on Aging.

“We have been learning that you need to maintain good health, do all the things necessary, exercise have a good balanced diet, but you also have to be aware of your own body and your own needs and you have to have open and frank discussions with your partner and take the steps necessary to protect yourself and your partner,” she adds.

Poot also encourages all women to take time to take care of themselves and their bodies.

Among the presenters today was Nurse Joan Cruz, who urged women to maintain their self esteem despite aging.

A press release from the National Council on Ageing states that older persons are often left out of the discussion that focuses around sexual health and this workshop offers a unique opportunity to discuss the needs of this vulnerable population.

Following the workshop this evening there were free medical screenings available including breast exam, cervical screening and Body Mass Index checks. A number of personnel from the Ministry of Health were also available  to provide services.
