A Guatemalan National, recently released from the Kolbe Foundation, was shot and killed in the Champon area at the Western Border in Benque. Reports are that Brian Corado was at a bar in the area when he was shot and killed at about at about 10:45 on Sunday night. Brian Corado had just been released from prison on March 30 after being remanded for hijacking Superintendent of Police Selvin Tillet and stealing his pickup truck in February of last year.

Champon is frequented by many Belizeans for a late night out and cheap alcoholic beverages.

On March 17, 2017, a tour operator from San Jose Succotz,  Carlos Manzanero,  was shot to death at Larios Bar located at the same Champon area.  On March 5, Amados Teck from Bullet Tree Falls Village met a similar fate while socializing in Melchor.
