On Tuesday, April 10, Paul Smith, an employee at the Radisson Fort George, was sentenced to a month in prison by Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith. He was charged for the possession of a controlled drug.

Police were conducting a house search when they asked Smith if he had anything illegal to declare to which Smith replied he had some weed. The police claimed that he asked for an excuse but he was instead detained and taken into police custody where he was charged.

In court, Smith pleaded guilty to the possession of 30.6 grams of cannabis. Court records showed that Smith was in debt of $155 for a previous conviction of the same offense. His father paid the fine before he was arraigned. Despite his debt being settled, the magistrate imposed a one month custodial sentence because he was previously convicted for the same offense.
