The 18-day peace in Belize City that the Police Department has been working so hard to cement in place, was disturbed by the murder of a taxi driver, 48 year-old Santiago Rodriguez. Police investigation so far suggests that it was not gang-related, and so if true, the cease fire that has been extensively discussed between all the city’s gangs is still in effect.

The victim, 48 year-old Santiago Rodriguez, was found inside his taxi vehicle on Unity Street, Belize City, at around 2 p.m. on Friday, April 28, 2017. Police say that he was inside his white Toyota 4Runner with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

Information suggests that he was working, doing his taxi runs for the day, and at around 10 that morning, residents of Unity Street heard the sound of a single gunshot being fired. Nobody went out to check, and about 4 hours later, someone found Rodriguez’s lifeless body, and called the police.

Police have reason to suspect that the killer was inside the vehicle, and that Rodriguez was robbed by his assailant. They believe that the culprit may have masqueraded as a paying customer, and that he was sitting in the back seat behind Rodriguez, who was driving. The investigation suggests that the gunman took aim from the backseat and killed him. Some personal items belonging to Rodriguez were missing.
