After 5 months of sitting behind prison bars awaiting his fate, 31 year old Lorenzo Smith Jr., accused of the killing of his prison cell mate, Alfonso Eck was found guilty of murder on Tuesday May 2.

After the guilty verdict, Justice Troadio J. Gonzalez deferred sentencing for Friday, May 5, 2017.

Smith Jr. was accused of the murder of Alonzo Eck who was found dead inside his cell on the night of October 9, 2009.

Initially, authorities thought his death was a suicide but Dr. Mario Estradabran later ruled his death a homicide as Smith Jr., was the only other person inside the cell at the time of Eck’s death, on the night of October 9, 2009, a Prison officer who found Eck said he was on the toilet in a stooping position with a blanket around his neck.

Smith had one hand on Eck’s neck and the other hand on his chest.

Doctor Mario Estradabran who testified in Smith’s Jr.’s trial said that Eck died from manual strangulation and that he did not commit suicide.

He also said in his testimony that Eck had an injury to his head caused by a sharp instrument.

In his trial, Smith Jr., was represented by Attorney, Oscar Selgado.

A mitigation plea will be heard on his behalf prior to sentencing.
