Verdes FC and the Belmopan Bandits in the finals of the Premier League of Belize Closing Season Print E-mail

The Premier League of Belize 2016-2017 Closing Season Football competition will enter its championship round on Sunday 7th May at 4:00 pm out at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town with game one of the two games series between Verdes FC and the defending champions the Belmopan Bandits, with the second and final game scheduled for Saturday 13th May at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in the City of Belmopan.

The Belmopan Bandits made it to the championship round when it played to a 1-1 draw with the Belize Defence Force on Saturday 29th April, at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan. The Belmopan Bandits was the first to get onto the scoreboard when Jairo Rochez scored his team’s goal in the 10th minute of play to give it a 1-0 lead.

The Belmopan Bandits took the slim lead well into the second half of the game, and it was not until the 71st minute of play, that Brian Martinez scored the equalising goal for the Belize Defence Force.

At the end of the long whistle, it was indeed a 1-1 draw, however, the Belmopan Bandits advanced to the championship round with an aggregate score of 2-1 over the Belize Defence Force.

Meanwhile, on Sunday 30th April, 2017, in the final game of the series between the Police United and Verdes FC, Police United won the game by the score of 2-0. The goals for the Police United FC were scored by Carlton Thomas in the 79th minute of play and Dareen Myers in the 87th minute of play. However, the aggregate score for both teams at the end of the match was 2-2 and the second spot in the finals was determined in penalty shootout.

In the penalty shootout, Verdes FC prevailed by the score of 8-7 over the Police United FC. The following Verdes FC players were all able to convert penalty kicks into goals: Gilroy Thurton, Jahron Myvette, Jarret Davis, Cristobal Gilharry, Everal Trapp, Ryan Gill, Orlando Jimenez and Victor Cruz Mejia.

For the Police United FC squad, the following players were able to convert: Trevor Lennan, Darren Myers, Harrison Roches, Lennox Castillo, Daniel Jimenez, Devon Makin and Carlton Thomas.

And so the season will begin and end for either the Belmopan Bandits or Verdes FC on Saturday 13th May, 2017.
