Telswin Lara, a 30-year-old unemployed of Arlington Drive, received a gunshot wound to the lower back. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Lara’s home. In relation to the shooting, Dane Gillett, 18-years-old, was charged for use of deadly means of harm with a deadly instrument and grievous harm. Lara has been admitted to the KHMH where he is listed as stable.

Gillett was brought before Magistrate Carlon Mendoza on May 9, 2017 for the shooting. He was unrepresented in court and no plea was taken from him. Mendoza explained that since the crime was allegedly committed with the use of a firearm, he could not be granted bail. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until July 28, 2017.

In a police report, Lara explained that around 1:00 a.m. on May 7, he was watching TV when he heard a continuous knocking at his door. He peered through his glass window to see Gillett, his neighbor and someone he has known for over three years. Gillett approached him and fired shots at him.

Lara was seen suffering from a gunshot injury to the left side of his back. Police officers conducting foot patrol on May 7 after 9:00 a.m. detained Gillett and escorted him to the Raccoon Street Police Station where he was charged.
