Police from Eastern Division South continue to investigate the gun murder of 19 year-old Michael Bonilla. He was the first teenager to have been gunned down and killed in the streets of Belize City in 25 days. Investigators do not believe that he was the victim of gang violence, and so the calm that the City’s gangs committed to before the Easter Holiday may remain undisturbed.

Unfortunately, this young man’s life was cut short, and so, his family must try to make sense of this tragedy, and move on, if possible. The cops found him dead at around 9 p.m. on Elston Kerr Street, which runs behind the Gwen Lizarraga High School. He was on top of his bicycle, and the cops observed that he had multiple gunshot injuries to the upper back and chest. Investigators have since found out that at around 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, he was riding that bike on Elston Kerr Street when he was fired upon by a lurking gunman. He died shortly afterwards, and police only had time to process the scene; it was already too late to rush him to the hospital for medical treatment.

His family and friends are now left to mourn what appears to be a senseless and unprovoked killing. That’s because Bonilla had no known enemies in the streets of Belize City, and up until a few weeks ago, he was living in Dangriga with his aunt and his sister. He grew up in Belize City, but after his mother passed away, his family took him to live down south.

No one knows exactly when but recently, he started spending time in the City again, and he was staying with friends and family at their homes. Friends and family shared their concerns that he may have come back to the City to meet his death.

He is not a trouble maker, and police say that they’ve never encountered him before. His family says that he was a very sociable person who enjoyed making people laugh. His cousin, who wished not to be identified, told the press, “In our yard we just hang out and we chill, we run jokes because Michael is always a jovial person. He loves running jokes, he like playing with the kids and having fun. That’s just him.”
