I have to thank the Amandala Editor for this week’s headline and for much of the quotes that I will use below!   World Press Freedom Day has just gone so this is the perfect time for us to reflect on the work of the ‘Fourth Pillar of Democracy.’  On May 7, 2017 Love News carried the following: ”According to the Reporters without Borders, in Belize, the coverage of political developments and criminal cases in Belize is polemical because the media have become polarized.” I want us to stay focus on the main point which is: In Belize the media have allowed itself to become way too polarized! Note that such a defective media will fail the populace; others will have to educate the people! I write to get straight, correct facts to the readers – no deceit, no lies; just the straight facts!

The Amandala Editor had made it clear that: “In the very first issue of this newspaper, on August 13, 1969, our opening statement focused on African and Indian history…”  You have read me telling all Belizeans that we need to be schooled in the History of Belize!  I repeat that it is the History of Belize that each and every one of us needs to be knowledgeable about!  There will be areas that cover Africans and Amerindians… but we need to know Belizean History!  On April 28, 2017 the Editorial wrote a long article entitled:” An alternative history.”  Readers, you need to recall that ‘Alternative History’ is a category of artistic composition of fiction consisting of stories in which one or more historical events occur differently.  Recall that factoids are “assumptions or speculations which have no existence before appearing in a magazine or newspaper, creations which are not so much lies as a product to manipulate emotion in the voters.”   There is really no place in Belize for the type of journalism that is based upon sensationalism and crude exaggeration; because of the serious Guatemala problem over our heads!

Clinton Canul Luna actually wrote:” … George Price was accused of selling out Belize to Guatemala when, to the contrary, the discussions that took place between the British and Guatemalans was for land adjustment or a cession of land and waters to Guatemala to settle the dispute.”  Where was Luna in 1957? Does he know about Contact? Newsprint? Printing Press? Million$ of Quetzal? Does he know the History of Belize?  I am taking this opportunity to beg everyone in the media to fact check the story before publication/broadcast and above all, DO NOT LIE.  In 2017, finding the truth is extremely easy. Writing about World Press Freedom Day, Micah Gooden failed to understand that when a photo of the screen of a PERSONAL device is disseminated, the journalist had acted irresponsibly!  No excuses!  Sen. Aldo Salazar’s correctly said:” I know that some of us might find it difficult to contain our rabid political prejudices and other prejudices, but please let us not allow that to distract from our professionalism.”

Perverse means showing a deliberate and obstinate desire to behave in a way that is unreasonable or unacceptable, often in spite of the consequences.  I beg the media to shed partisanship and perversion.

Mr. Editor then ends in a flourish:” We Belizeans are not Europeans: we are fundamentally African and Mayan.  Can you say DNA test?”  Poor thing!  He really does not know that the MATERNAL MITOCHONDRAL  DNA of ALL seven billion plus of us goes directly back to the Rift Valley Area of East Africa!  The most extreme right-wing, neo-Nazi, white supremacists has DNA that goes to AFRICA…wow!
