The Ministry of Education is this month celebrating Education Showcase with a number of activities aimed at highlighting education in Belize. As part of the observance, Minister of Education, Hon. Patrick Faber has invited his counterpart minister from Antigua and Barbuda, Michael Brown to come to Belize. He was specifically invited to share his experience in the implementation technology and e-books for students to serve a double role of having students exposed to technology at an earlier age while also reducing the cost of books to students.

Hon. Faber explained that he met Brown at a conference in Bahamas and decided that his visit to Belize would allow for Caribbean partners to come together and work together to solve common issues that face the region.  Our goals and objectives are same he said. He added that the purpose was to engage him on the issue of digital textbooks which Brown has implemented in Antigua and Barbuda and is something that is being looked at to be implemented in Belize.

Speaking to Brown, he explained that his introduction of digital textbooks has significantly reduced the cost of education in his country. He added that a side benefit to the program is that technology is introduced to students at an earlier age and allows for additional resources to be accessed through that technology. Commenting on the introduction of technology, Brown said that it is “as critical as fresh air.” To do so he said would mean exposing young persons to it at an earlier age in order not to leave them behind.
