Work is ongoing to refurbish the old San Ignacio Hospital by the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH). Efforts are being conducted to preserve it as a historical landmark in San Ignacio Town.

George Thompson, Associate Director for Park Management within the Institute of Archaeology says that “we are working very hard to ensure that the entire design remains the same just as people have been accustomed to seeing, we are ensuring that we maintain the architecture of the building.”

NICH is now working along with the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council to follow a time line in re-building the old hospital as the Town Hall is also being built nearby. Actual work on the old hospital building began about two months ago and may be completed by August of this year.

When completed the old Hospital site will be utilized by NICH as a house of culture for the municipality of San Ignacio and Santa Elena.
