A highly interactive meeting between community leaders and members of the Las Flores and Hillview community was held on Tuesday night at the community center in Las Flores, near Belmopan. Present at this meeting was the Hon. John Saldivar, Representative for the Area; Mayor of Belmopan Khalid Belisle and members of the Belmopan City Council.

The meeting in Las Flores on Tuesday night was well attended and is the first in a series of neighborhood watch meetings that have been organized by the Belmopan City Council.

“Keeping the promise!!! Staying in touch,” reminds the Hon. John Saldivar, who is representative of the Belmopan Area and also Minister of Defense.

Reporting on the meeting, Jose Chaco, Municipal Manager within the Belmopan City Council tells the Guardian that the neighborhood watch meeting was an opportunity for community members to express their needs and make suggestions. According to Chacon, members of the Las Flores Community are asking for the improvements to infrastructure.

Jose Chacon, who grew up in Las Flores also says “…we are pretty confident that we are safe , but we still have that little thing in our mind.”  Chacon informed that there has been an influx of immigrants in the area in recent months and reminds about the recent escape of the 22 dangerous gang members from the Marco Aurelio Soto prison just North of Tegucigalpa.

“There’s a high potential that a few of those might end up our way,” says Jose Chacon.

“But we have community policing now in Las Flores, they have 24 officers and they are always on a day to day basis patrolling,” reassures Jose Chacon.
