On May 28, 2017, Independence Police received information of a body found beside the highway in Bella Vista Village, Toledo. They made checks between miles 45 and 46 on the Southern Highway where they saw the body of 21-year-old Armando Alvarenga of trio Village, Toledo lying in the bushes on the side of the highway.

Police observed that his head was partially decapitated. The body had what appeared to be gunshot wounds to the center of his chest and to the upper right shoulder. He also had chop wounds to the back of both the left and right upper shoulders. At the scene, Police also saw a damaged bicycle, a machete and two 9 mm expended shells.

A number of men have been detained as Alvarenga was said to have numerous persons who wanted to cause him harm.
