Florencio Pop pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of  manslaughter on May 30, 2017 in the Dangriga Supreme Court for the February 2012 killing of Felix Cucul Ich. Ich was fatally chopped in Southern Belize and Pop was sentenced to 15 years in jail effective March 6, 2012.

The murder of Ich occurred on February 27, 2012 between miles 53 and 54 on the Southern Highway in Bladden Village. He sustained a single chop wound to the neck. A post mortem examination revealed that Ich died as a result of traumatic shock due to partial decapitation due to a chop wound to the neck.

On May 30 before Justice Denis S. Hanomansingh, Pop changed his not guilty plea of murder to a guilty plea of the lesser charge of manslaughter, on the advice of his attorney Oscar Selgado. As a result of his guilty plea, he received a reduction of 7 years from his charge. 5 years was reduced since he saved the court’s time from going to trial and an additional 2 years was granted because he handed himself over to the police two days after the murder.
