A brand new shop, the Octavia Waight Thrift Shop and Surprise Boutique was opened Monday behind the main Octavia Waight Center in San Ignacio Town. The new shop now becomes a new revenue stream to take care of the 34 residents that are now at the Octavia Waight Center.

Now available at a reasonable price are miscellaneous items such as clothing for male, female and children. There are a range of house decoration items. Others include glassware, sheets, shoes, swim suits, sweaters, phone accessories, coffee makers and electronic items. The new shop is located at the corner of Carmelita and San Ignacio Streets. Staffed by volunteers, the shop will be opened from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

“I’d like to encourage anybody to come and visit our thrift shop and help the elderly by purchasing something; if it is even a dollar you are contributing to the elderly,” says Claudette Hulse, Administrator at the Octavia Waight Center.

In addition to the thrift shop, the Octavia Waight Center also has its popular Convention Hall where public functions have been held in the past for a fee.

While the Octavia Waight Center in San Ignacio is largely subsidized by the Government of Belize, the administrators have sought other revenue streams for the comfort of the elderly residents.
