The Rotary Club of San Ignacio continues to sponsor young scholars to both the secondary and  tertiary levels of education. As a fully volunteer organization, the Rotary Club of San Ignacio along with international donors and sponsors, support a scholarship program for students starting in high school.

Rafael Cal was a visionary pioneer of the Rotary Clubs, who served as a Manager of the Scotiabank Branch in San Ignacio for many years. Even with his passing, a firm legacy remains with the Raphael Cal Memorial scholarship, which supports the young through four years of studies. While the students go through their educational career, the Rotary Club of San Ignacio Scholarship Committee members are their mentors.

It was no surprise then, when the Rotary Club of San Ignacio hosted seven students to celebrate last week and they are all now recent graduates. Five students are now graduates from Sacred Heart College in San Ignacio and two students are from St. Ignatius High School in Santa Elena.

The gift of two more years of sixth form education comes from the Paulita Bedran Memorial Scholarship and is awarded to the graduating student with the highest grade point average over the four years. That prestigious award went to Alberto Barrera, who will be studying at Sacred Heart Junior College in the field of business. The students read thank you letters to their sponsors last week and were very thankful for the support from their families and Rotary.

We all thank the Rotary Club of San Ignacio for investing in human capital. Their firm belief that education is a key to life-long success is manifested every time these young students graduate from both high school and sixth form.
