Belmopan – Today, to commemorate World Oceans Day, the U.S. Embassy led a beach cleanup project in Dangriga.

The U.S. Army South’s Beyond the Horizon partnership team and the U.S. Embassy joined forces with Dangriga City Council, Dangriga Community Police, Belize Defence Force, Belize Coast Guard, and 98 students and four teachers from four different schools in Dangriga, including Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program graduates.  The participants cleaned up a stretch of beach in front of the Holy Ghost School in Dangriga.  The team collected approximately 150 bags of debris.

The Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Adrienne Galanek and the Mayor of Dangriga His Worship Francis Humphreys joined the volunteers in the cleanup and delivered remarks at a ceremony following the event.

World Oceans Day is officially recognized by the United Nations and has become an annual celebration on June 8, as well as a call for ocean conservation action throughout the year.  This year’s theme is “Our Oceans, Our Future,” focusing on preventing pollution from plastic items and cleaning the ocean beaches of marine litter.  This is the fourth year that the Embassy has partnered with the Dangriga community to commemorate World Oceans Day and to promote a healthy environment.
